Boston native Matthew Mosher (we're told this is his real name) wants us to know that he rocks the art world, and is often described as "a force of will, intellect, and creativity." When he is not chasing squirrels or catching ducks, the idol to adolescents supports healthy competition by teaching courses in carrot dueling and advanced squirt gun engineering using a teaching style referred to as "bottled lightning." Currently Matthew is Mastering Fine Arts in Intermedia at Arizona State University, after Bacheloring (?) Fine Arts at the Rhode Island School of Design.
What's on your Inspiration Wall (real or imagined)?
1. A Map of the world with places I have lived, visited, and want to visit.
2. A watercolor painting of autumn leaves.
3. A postcard from my best friend that has a photo of a cat with deer antlers on the front. A Catelope if you will.
4. A bright red Intelligentsia coffee bag.
5. A show card for The Sugar Thieves, players of the best meat shaking blues in Phoenix.
What's your last big project?
My last big project was a full room installation at the West Wind Studios in Phoenix for Art Detour weekend. I collaborated with three friends, Teresa Martin, Peter Christenson, and Matt Garcia to fill the space with anaglyph drawings (the old school red and blue line 3D ones), suspended 3D glasses, red and blue balloons, and tape explosions. Then we had a dance party in there. After wearing the glasses for so long everything I looked at for the next day split into red and blue.
What's your next big project?
Towards the end of August I'm having a solo show at the Step Gallery in Tempe titled "The Gallery Is No Place For Artists." It's pretty hush-hush for right now as I'm still working out the details, but it sure will be exciting!
Why do you do what you do?
My work strives to reconnect cyberspace and the physical world by awakening the minds of passers-by with an abrupt, but momentary, separation from their routine. I love how technology can keep us in touch with people who may be miles away, but I also like making things. The physical computing art I create fulfills both of these desires nicely. I am also obsessed with distilling ideas down to their essence, which is the basis for the majority of my text work.
What is something you want Phoenix to know about you?
Dear Phoenix, I want you to know that I get everywhere by bike, bus, and light-rail. I know sometimes people say that a car is necessary to live in you, or that you are not bikable, but it's not true! You are totally bikable! Now if only you had a really good 90s night dance spot...
