This week from Pinterest, we're bringing you a simple and thrifty way to liven up your walls.
This idea transforms the Dignitet curtain wire system from Ikea into a way to show off your artwork without commiting to expensive frames. It leaves you with a permanent display space that can be continually updated.
If you find yourself a collector of pretty paper things, or even teatowels, this project is for you.
Rather than just hang the wire, we decided to paint first. Choosing paint is a tough decision. It's just too much responsibility. I don't like having to commit... but after gathering a collection of about 30 paint chips, we settled on Martha Stewart's Wintergreen.
Installing the Dignitet is the opposite of coloring book style fun. It's an Ikea product after all, and if you're familiar with their instructions, you know what I mean. Maybe you're good at interpreting Ikea directions, but I had to stare at them for a good thirty minutes before I felt completely confident in my interpretation. (Good thing we had some iced coffees to keep our spirits up. If you're going to attempt this I suggest you get some iced coffees too. Or maybe sip on a Bourbon Chocolate Milkshake while you figure out the directions? Now, that's an idea... )
I also suggest allowing yourself a good two hours to conquer this project. It shouldn't take you that long, but you may run into problems, as we did. Our Dignitet almost popped out of the wall on one side due to the tension in the wire. Luckily, we were able to fix it.
To avoid this, make sure you fully understand what kind of anchoring your walls need. The Dignitet warns of this in their instructions (which you can't read until you open the package), "As wall materials vary, screws for fixing to wall are not included." They also say you can call them for advice on suitable screw systems. Well, I say screw not making this advice easily accessible!
Once the Dignitet is on the wall, you immediately forget about all the troubles you went through and start clipping things to it in different combinations to see how it looks. It's like a real life Pinterest board. Ours, by the way, you should be following.
