Last week's Phoenix New Times cover story, "Pop Art," spotlights some of the pop-up galleries currently operating out of empty retail spaces around the Valley. While we focused on the pop-up galleries on Marshall Way in Old Town Scottsdale, we had to mention Gallery 2345, a pop-up in Phoenix.
Gallery 2345 opened this May and has held bi-monthly exhibitions. Tonight they're hosting a launch reception for Amelia magazine, a new local publication that will feature notable local women. The first issue focuses on Dr. Gladys Taylor McGarey, a celebrated healer.

The reception at Gallery 2345 will also feature artwork by abstract painter Kathryn Henneman, sculptor and mask maker Zarco Guerrero (pictured left), photographers Stacie Schimke and Pamela Root, and Kimberly Harris, who has several pop art watercolor paintings in the gallery.
Martin-Castillo says there will also be food and drink, as well as a sitar player and East Indian dancing to honor Dr. McGarey's early life in India.
"This is the kind of thing that's perfect for the gallery. This is what we aspire to -- combining art, culture, music, and life," Martin-Castillo says. "It's things more meaningful than the art itself. It's the artists and their lives, the things that affect them and the stories they have to tell."
The Amelia launch reception with Dr. Gladys McGarey takes place Thursday, July 1, at 5 p.m. at Gallery 2345, 2345 E. University Drive in Phoenix. Admission costs $10, and a portion of the proceeds will go to the Gladys Taylor McGarey Medical Foundation. For more information, call 602-300-2682 or visit www.gallery2345.com
