Looking for something to do this week? "Night Owl" is a quick guide to special nights at bars and clubs around town. We'll give you a few hints re: cover, dress code, music and atmosphere. Wednesday nights mark flamenco night with Flamenco Por La Vida at Gallo Blanco.
The Place: 401 W. Clarendon Ave., Phoenix. (602) 274-4774.
The Time: Dancers perform from 7 to 9 p.m.
The Cover: Free.
The Music: Spanish guitar and percussion are played while singer Javier Hernandez belts out popular flamenco hits. Foot stomping and the room's constant clapping add a soundtrack of their own. The People: A mix of hotel guests and downtown regulars. Most of the crowd is over 30, and it's definitely a kid-friendly environment. The Charm: Ramirez and her performers are an extremely friendly group. They greet the regulars and invite audience members to come on stage and dance with them at the end of the night. What We Loved and What We Didn't Love: The size of the space is a double-edged sword. We love the intimacy of the bar and the ability to chat with the surrounding tables. However, once it fills up (and it does), you could be stuck standing in the back or eating in the main dining room, so get there on time! Going back: Recommended.
The Food and Drinks: Hosted inside of the Clarendon's Gallo Blanco Café, the bar area serves the restaurant's full menu. We love the paloma margarita, a bowl of guacamole, and a tray of tacos.
