The Scottsdale 6 drive-in closed last week after more than 34 years, but that doesn't mean there's nowhere to go in the Valley for a slice of drive-in Americana.

For starters, there's William LeGoullon's exhibition of drive-in theater photographs, "Intermission," opening at Bokeh Gallery in October.

And for the traditional experience, the one drive-in left in metro Phoenix -- the Glendale 9 drive-in -- is offering three free movies this Thursday, September 22.

The Glendale 9 drive-in is owned by a California-based company called West Wind, the same company that owned and operated the Scottsdale 6 drive-in. The Scottsdale location closed because the company was unable to reach a lease renewal agreement with the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, which owns the land.

But West Wind owns the land on which Glendale 9 sits, and company representatives say that drive-in isn't going anywhere. West Wind's continuing its bi-annual tradition of offering free movies at all its drive-ins this Thursday, September 22, with complimentary showings of the films Cars 2, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Transformers 3. There will also be regular-size nachos available for $1.

Tony Maniscalco, vice president of marketing for West Wind, says the company hosts free movie nights in April and September, on the weekends before expected blockbusters come out. He says attendance is always good, and free movie night at Scottsdale 6 this past spring did very well. Usually, Maniscalco says, the spring night does better than the fall night in other states. It's the opposite in hot and dry Phoenix. "Your winter is like the summer for all our other locations," he says with a laugh.

The Glendale 9 Drive-In is located at 5650 N. 55th Avenue in Glendale. Call 800-326-3264 or visit www.westwinddriveins.com for more information.
