James E. Garcia wears a lot of hats. The Phoenix-based creative is a playwright and journalist who's taught writing and ethnic studies courses at Arizona State University since 2003 and has worked as a reporter, columnist, foreign correspondent and television and radio commentator.

In 2002, Garcia founded the New Carpa Theater Company, which focuses on Latino and multicultural theater works and is launching its sixth full season this year with "Noche de Drama" on Thursday night.

From 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the A.E. England Building, New Carpa Theater cast members will perform "Noche de Drama," which the theater describes as "a night of script-in-hand performances of monologues, short plays and play excerpts by renowned Latino and Latina authors."

Garcia will host an audience Q&A after the performance. Tickets are available at the door and to the public at $5 for adults, and $3 for children and students (donation). Complimentary tickets available for students and at-risk groups.
