In October, local and national designers will unite for Phoenix Design Week, a 14-day celebration of Phoenix design and culture. And while that's still a few months away, it's never too early to save space for what's shaping up to be a kickass lineup of design events.
In its third year, PDW will include three design-based challenges open to the public for participation: Exposed, Pivot, and Thrive (registration has opened for the last two).
The Design Week website, which launched last month, provides a detailed rundown of sponsored and independent events -- here are five we're making sure to check out.
1. ADLibs
This one's about collaborating with a designing or writing partner to create an advertising campaign.
Sign up as soon as possible, because designers will be paired up soon. After teams are assembled, each will be given a product category and will come up with a company name, product ideas, and an exhibition (with a presentation date that's yet to be announced).
2. Creative Connect
Everyone loves the free events.
Creative Connect is actually a monthly meeting in Phoenix meant to connect creative minds. The organization's October 11 meeting (at 6 p.m.) will fall during Phoenix Design Week which will be available for the thousands of conference-goers to meet up.
3. PechaKucha
PechaKucha (Japanese for "chit-chat") is basically speed dating for designers and their passions on October 5 at 7 p.m.
A lineup of speakers are each given 20 slides (and 20 seconds per slide) to share information about current projects, ideas, and design trends.
"Stand up, tell the world what you got, and then sit the hell down," according to the event's web page.
4. Maker Faire
After successful events in a few other cities nationwide, Maker Faire's coming to Phoenix.
On October 15, this event will showcase an assortment of locally made creations in an attempt to inspire "people of all ages to roll up their sleeves and become makers." Check out the event's website for more details on applications and location information.
5. Modern Phoenix Tours
Modern Phoenix, Alison King's blog about local modern architecture, will be offering tours of the city's contemporary design.
Details and dates for this one haven't been set, but be ready to pounce -- the tours always sell out quickly.
And there's plenty more to come. For additional PDW details, see the official website and stay tuned for looks behind the scenes and previews of additional events.
