Gem features one standout piece from a local shop. Whether it's a jacket, necklace, or handbag, it's on our have-to-have list.

What: To wear a cape well is no easy feat. There's the association with superhero costumery, Little Red Riding Hood and James Brown connections, and its use as a royal cover-up. Even if you shake off all that imagery, there's a good chance the outerwear simply won't flatter you.

That's not the case with this vintage capelet. In warm wool with a neutral plaid color scheme, the coat could read Betty Draper throwback or modern-day chic.

Where: Petit joy Vintage

Cost: $44

Style It: We imagine taking this cape for a chilly, winter walk, latte in hand. Counter the voluminous cape with tapered leg pants from Burberry Prorsum, pleated with a paperbag waist for visual texture should the cape be worn open, and Loeffler Randall wedge booties to lengthen the legs, further balancing the silhouette. Tuck into those a plum top from Chinti and Parker. Accessorize in the coat's neutral tones with Rag & Bone driving gloves, a Madewell tote in leopard print, and a pair of crystal and pearl Bijoux Heart earrings that look like they could be tree toppers.
