On Wednesday, June 19, the Renaissance Phoenix Downtown Hotel will join 114 other Marriott properties on five continents in celebrating a Global Day of Discovery with art, music, and food throughout the day. The idea behind the day-long party is to encourage discovery and bring people together in the downtown Phoenix community.
From 5 a.m. to midnight the hotel will host a variety of events including a live mural painted by local artist, Hugo Medina. The hotel will also raffle off a sculpture by artist James Day.

The main attraction of the event will be the creation of Medina's mural. Throughout the day he'll paint in the alley between Adams and Monroe streets and First Street and Central Avenue. The mural will measure 30 feet by 40 feet and will be painted 30 feet off the ground.
The design, meant to reflect the theme of discovery, will be of "weathered hands cupping the earth," according to the hotel. And if everything goes as planned Medina will finish the massive work of art in just one day.
In addition, discoverers can check out contemporary sculptor James Day who will be painting at the hotel from 10 a.m. to noon. One of Day's "Life Cycle" sculptures will be given away in a drawing that will be free to enter -- but you'll have to be present to win.
DJ William Reed will provide music, and Parker Morden will perform. Other activities planned throughout the day include coffee education, cooking demos, and drink specials at the hotel's ICON Lounge.
