In case you didn't get enough of David Tennant in the hour-and-a-half 50th anniversary special of Doctor Who (we know we didn't), you can watch him conquer the role of King Richard II at FilmBar. Fans of the long-running British sci-fi series know Tennant as the lovable and quirky tenth doctor, but way before he ever stepped foot in the TARDIS he had a long and well-rounded career in theater. Now Tennant returns to the stage in the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of Richard II, and Tennant fanatics won't have to travel across the pond to catch his performance.

In a special two-night event, FilmBar is screening Richard II, the Shakespearean historical play about the downfall and demise of King Richard II, played by Tennant. In case you're questioning his acting chops, the Scottish actor has played roles from Romeo to Hamlet with the Royal Shakespeare Company in four different seasons, along with being lead in several other plays. In an interview for the company, Tennant says that after seeing this play several times, he always found the role alluring, but also challenging.

"He's not a hero at all," Tennant says. "He's quite a complicated character so I'm daunted by the prospect of doing it justice but very excited to get the chance."

While the cinematic showings are filmed from live performances, the end result is a mix of different camera positions to "ensure cinema audiences get the best seat in the house."

Filmed at Stratford-upon-Avon, the Royal Shakespeare Company's Richard II will screen at FilmBar at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 15, and at 6 p.m. Saturday, December 21. Tickets are available for $18 via the FilmBar website, where you'll also find more information.
