The Steampunk Street II event didn't just occupy Main Street in Mesa over the weekend, it flat out transformed it.
Steampunk Street was part of the Second Sci-fi Friday and specifically welcomed steampunk artists, bands, vendors, and attendees to join the hordes of zombies, stormtroopers, and "regular" visitors on the art walk.
Evermore Nevermore, the collectable shop that organizes the event, invited dozens of Victorian-inspired accessory vendors, as well as the usual steampunk suspects: Steam Crow, the Brose Brothers, the Mantecoza crew, and Teslapunk "inventor" Patrick Brawley.
Luckily for everyone involved, the overwhelming ratio of steampunks to other sci-fi enthusiasts didn't cause any issues or spawn any Sci-Fi battles.
"I think there's only about 10 percent sci-fi here and the rest is steampunk," joked Daniel Davis, creator of Steam Crow. "But I don't think it's a big deal, as long as everyone is having fun."
One of the artists for the Star Wars show, Allen Amis, took his relative minority status in stride.
"I'm such a big nerd of so many things, so it doesn't bother me at all," said Amis, who was showing off some custom made Star Wars weapons. "I think it's great and some of my stuff can even be modified for steampunk so it works out either way."
Friday night was the last Steampunk Street event for a while, so if you venture down to Mesa for a Second Sci-fi Friday, you can expect to see less airship captains and a few more red shirts.
