Dictionary.com defines “residue” as “something that remains after a part is removed, disposed of, or used; remainder; rest; remnant.” Mikey Estes and Kevin Moore explore this definition with “Residue,” an art exhibition which “builds upon the concept of the residual as a surplus substance caught in a state of limbo searching for a new use,” according to a press release. Think of all those leftover pieces that come in every Lego set. What are these pieces there for? What’s the ultimate purpose of these homeless parts? The Estes and Moore exhibition tackles this very mystery, further denoting residue as something “with no fixed state of being … simultaneously here and not yet here.” But forget Legos: the pair have devised a series of sculptures and “process-based” drawings—some abstract, others created from repurposed materials—that give this residue a place in time, no matter how fleeting.

See the exhibition from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday, October 30, at the Step Gallery, 605 East Grant Street. Admission is free. An artists' reception is scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, November 7. Call 480-965-7044 or visit asuevents.asu.edu/residue.

Mondays-Saturdays, 12-5 p.m. Starts: Oct. 30. Continues through Nov. 8, 2014
