John and Ted Lewis are creative craftsmen. They're also brothers.
Their business, Lewis Interiors, is part upholstery services, part furniture sales and completely fascinating.
During the first week of October, the brothers will open their gallery in downtown Glendale. The small showroom, located near 58th and Glendale avenues, is filled with furniture that mixes functionality, comfort and design.

The Lewis Interiors business has been in the family for decades. The brothers' grandfather owned a high-design furniture store in Michigan, and as children, the two remember being surrounded by unique furniture and art.
The inspiration they gathered from growing up around this work revealed itself nine years ago, when John and Ted Lewis began making their own furniture. They started by creating art from recycled metal scraps and eventually expanded.
Today, the two have been known to transform basic furniture into modern pieces. Though modern furniture is their niche, the men work with interior designers and customers to personalize pieces. As certified welders and trained upholsterers, the brothers have taken their technical skills and mixed them with their enthusiasm for art and design.
The Lewis Interiors showroom displays a collection of old and new. Many of the pieces are the restored works of well-known designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Aarnio, and Stanley Jay Friedman.Their shop was previously in an industrial park near 51st and Missouri avenues. Though the old location provided a lot of space, the store became a hidden gem. John and Ted say they hope their new location will give them exposure and allow them to become more involved in the community.
Oh, and they don't stop at furniture. The two create their own artwork and have opened their space up to display art by local artists. After their new location opens, the brothers will designate Friday evenings, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., to an art gathering in which local artists can come together to network.
