The signature joke formula of the frequently brilliant young comedienne Wendy Liebman is the added phrase that makes an initially innocuous remark go bad. "I'm a writer," Liebman will say, in her prim yet spacy voice, and then, as if to herself, she'll add, "I write checks. . . . Mostly fiction." It's the punch line as casual, dying-fall afterthought. Borrowing a title from H.G. Wells, Shemer Art Center and Museum hosts "The Shape of Things to Come," a juried show of contemporary sculpture. Works by Eddie Shea are featured in the Front Gallery; sculptures by Larry McLaughlin continue indefinitely on the museum grounds. "Carlinda's Song," choreographed to the Portuguese blues form known as Fado by guest artist Marta Renzi, is one of six dance pieces that make up the program at the ASU Spring Dance Concert. The work is named after Carlinda Rebelo, a longtime custodian in the university's dance building who overheard the music, which she had loved since she was a child in Lisbon, as Renzi listened to it in the studio one day, and rushed in in tears. Rebelo appears in the title role in Renzi's piece, a narrative about a dressmaker and the mannequin who symbolizes the various men in her life. Also on the bill at the annual event is "Thin Air," by dance professor Cliff Keuter; "The Collective," by dance professor Marion Kirk Jones; an Argentine tango piece called "Tango Para Hoy," developed by dance graduate students Danilea Borgialli and Jeff Musgrove; "Nothing in Particular," choreographed by the Murkofsky/Tsukayama Dance Theater; "A Sense of Place," by student Nova Mejia; and "Tango in the Emotional Vineyards" by Wendy Longmire-Davis. The concert opens at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 14. It continues at the same time Thursday, April 15; Friday, April 16; and Saturday, April 17; and at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 18, at the University Dance Laboratory at Nelson Fine Arts Center, 10th Street and Mill in Tempe.
