No sad faces are allowed this Monday, Phoenix. Here's something to do every day this week.

Dr. Gladys T. McGarey @ Changing Hands Kelly Osbourne and Kate Moss can dye their hair gray all they want. Doesn't change the fact that it looks better on a lady who's earned her silver streaks, which signify strength and wisdom rather than a knack for trendiness.

These are the qualities that make old women treasures, according to Dr. Gladys T. McGarey, though we'd be hard-pressed to find opposition. McGarey's book The World Needs Old Ladies straddles humor and seriousness in its message of holistic health and elderly appreciation. McGarey shares the work at 7 p.m. today at Tempe's Changing Hands Bookstore, 6428 South McClintock Drive. Admission is free with purchase of the book ($18). Biz Book Club @ Co+Hoots Last year, Arizona was named the number one entrepreneurial state in the union by CNNMoney, via Kauffman Foundation's Index of Entrepreneurial Activity. Unsurprisingly, it takes maximum hustle to bring life to the desert and if you've got it, you'll feel at home at CO+HOOTS' Biz Book Club Tuesday, August 6.

The monthly meeting of the minds in the downtown Phoenix coworking, tech, and startup hotspot is shepherded by Valley ghostwriter Joey Robert Parks. This month, the focus is on Brad Feld's 2012 book Startup Communities: Building an Entrepreneurial Ecosystem in Your City. The door is open for big fans of the read, and the Biz Book Club even welcomes you if you've been too busy on your grind to read the book at all.

The CO+HOOTS Biz Book Club congregates at CO+HOOTS, 1027 East Washington Street in Phoenix, and the confabulation starts at 7 p.m. Admission is free. Visit www.cohoots.com or call 602-688-2825. -- Jose Gonzalez

Everything You Always Wanted to Know About the Culture Wars* (*But Were Afraid to Ask) @ Herberger Theater "I don't act that much," says playwright/journalist/professor/activist James Garcia, founder and artistic director of New Carpa Theater Company, "probably because I just don't have time." But Garcia's made time to create and appear in New Carpa's one-man show, Everything You Always Wanted to Know About the Culture Wars* (*But Were Afraid to Ask), at Herberger Lunch Time Theater through Thursday, August 15.

"It's been floating around in my head for a long time, because of what's happening in Arizona regarding civil rights issues and human rights issues and immigration and things that Arizona is kind of notorious for," Garcia says of the compilation of monologues and vignettes, which presents assorted real-life characters traveling through both geographical and psychological space. "It's not a comedy," he says, "but it flows back and forth into satire because some of what we deal with is so absurd."

Curtain time Wednesday, August 7, is 12:10 p.m. at the Herberger's Kax Stage, 222 East Monroe Street. Admission is $6. For reservations, lunch orders, and more, visit www.herbergertheater.org/lunch_time_theater or call 602-252-8497. -- Julie Peterson

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. New York Mets @ Chase Field The Arizona Diamondbacks need us, you guys. At their July 5 home game against the Rockies, attendance at Chase Field was as high as it's been all season, topping 45,000, and they won that game five to nil. Since then attendance has waned to an average of about half of what it was on that day. Since then, our boys have suffered, with 10 additional losses in July (as of this writing) as well as the loss of the NL West's first-place spot. There's such a thing as home field advantage, and our August 9 opponents, the New York Mets, know it well. Let's get our numbers - and our team's standing - back where they belong.

Be the D-Backs' 10th man as they take on the Mets on Friday at 401 East Jefferson Street. The first pitch goes out at 6:40 p.m. Visit www.ticketmaster.com or call 602-462-6500 for tickets, $12 and up. Zachary Fowle
