Looking for ways to fill up your weekend? Here are your five best bets for getting out and about in the Valley of the Sun.
Kellogg's Tour Of Gymnastics Champions @ Jobing.com Arena Consider yourself warned. Olympic fever may have subsided, but this weekend it's making a comeback. 2008 Olympic all-around champion Nastia Liukin will headline an evening of gymnastics with members of the 2012's Fab/Fierce Five crew, including Gabby Douglas, Kyla Ross, and Jordyn Wieber.
Teammates McKayla Maroney and Aly Raisman were injured doing the show in Ontario a few days ago, and while it's been reported that Raisman has recovered we haven't heard if Maroney's back in top form. But that doesn't mean the spectacle will suffer. Jake Dalton, John Orozco, and Jonathan Horton are all scheduled to perform, along with other Olympians and some local athletes, too.
The show comes to Jobing.com Arena on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 to $200.
Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures @ AMC Westgate Yes, Shia LaBeouf is super annoying. And, yeah, we blame him a little bit for Kingdom of the Crystal Skull sucking. (Spielberg deserves most of it.) But nobody goes to an Indiana Jones movie looking for characters cooler than Indie himself. That's why the first few flicks merit digging up and rewatching. A couple of AMC theaters will give fans of the adventurous archaeologist that chance with back-to-back screenings of the whole franchise, from Raiders of the Lost Ark to the significantly less good, but still fun, Crystal Skull.
The marathon begins at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at AMC Westgate 20 and Ahwatukee 24. Tickets are $25.
Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market @ WestWorld of Scottsdale The Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market was born from a garage and estate sale hunter's mentality shared by three girlfriends -- Lindsey Holt, Coley Arnold, Monique Wallis -- with insatiable appetites for killer finds (and a dash of tush humor). Inspired by a shopping excursion through the Northwest, the trio began hosting occasional shopping events for desert dwelling vintage junkies in the backyard of a Phoenix home. Since then, they've expanded their offerings by hosting more than 70 Arizona-based vendors and moved shop to WestWorld of Scottsdale.
Lindsey says that shoppers will find "all things chippy, rusty, vintage, and handmade" in the market of clothing, jewelry, antique furniture, and other treasures on Saturday, September 15. She also notes that the market will relocate to Icehouse after that edition of the sale packs up, and promises the new venue will create "an amazing backdrop and atmosphere to complement our markets."
Early entry to the market begins at 7:30 a.m. and costs $8. General admission is $4 and starts at 9 a.m. Kids under 12 get in free all day
Splat Paint Party @ Madison Event Center If art reflects life and life reflects art, then we're not sure how to classify the living art that attendees at Splat Paint Party. But we are sure that it'll be a colorful event. The rave-style bash promises plenty of paint and enough EDM to match, with scheduled sets from Dirty Talk and DJ Spear.
Cover is $20 at the door before 9 p.m. and $25 after at Madison Event Center on Saturday.
The Price is Right Live @ Mesa Arts Center If just to yell "The price is wrong!," a trip to check out the live version of The Price is Right is worth it. Neither Bob Barker nor Drew Carey will be hosting (we're guessing Happy Gilmore won't make an appearance either), but Game Show Network staple Todd Newton will pull audience members from their seats to play classic games from the show -- and win some swag, too. Those who wish to play can register three hours prior to showtime for a chance to get in on the action.
The show starts at 7 p.m. on Sunday at Mesa Arts Center's Ikeda Theater. Tickets are $25 to $45.
