Besides doing fun relationship stuff like arguing about how to discipline our dog, New Times blogger Tyler Hughes and his girlfriend, Jackie Cronin, go to the movies.
Tyler: So that was pretty good.
Jackie: It was good, but it wasn't as good as I had expected it to be. The trailers made it seem epic and full of action but there weren't that many action scenes in the film.
Tyler: Yeah, I mean, the action was good but there was just less than I felt there should have been. Clu was creating a massive army then ... nothing. Instead, a lot of the plot dealt with Jeff Bridges' roles, Kevin Flynn and Clu, and how he was the creator of the Grid. I just expected more cyberspace kick-assery. Damn you misleading movie trailers!
Jackie: Exactly. The climax didn't really have much build up. The story was just kind of going along then, bam! it is the climax of the movie. And Jeff Bridges definitely had the strongest performance but I couldn't escape the image of the Dude flying around in techno-space, especially when he has lines like "You are really messing with my Zen, man!"
Tyler: Jeff Bridges did have all of the best lines. It seems like they wrote the script with Jeff Bridges two characters in mind, then wrote the rest of the script around that. They could have gone either heavy sci-fi or heavy action, but there wasn't quite enough of either.
Jackie: I agree. Plus, I wish that Olivia Wilde had a little more to do. She had kind of a cute character and she kicked ass but I just wish there was ... more.
Tyler: Yeah, me too. This role is a much different turn from her role in House. Plus she looks good in a black and neon-striped bodysuit.
Jackie: Oh! I almost forgot. My favorite part was when they went and visited Michael Sheen's character, Castor. Sheen was just so flamboyant and over the top and British, it was the perfect shot of weird, like a mash up between Jack Nicholson's Joker and Beetlejuice with a side of David Bowie. I was actually starting to get a bit bored until he showed up.
Tyler: Oh yeah, that scene was great. Plus we got to see Olivia Wilde kick some program ass in a bar. Oh yeah, and Daft Punk's soundtrack was perfect. It was (sometimes) progressive techno with a synth vibe and did not detract from the movie at all. I'm going to have to go download that soon...
Jackie: Was that your favorite part of the movie?
Tyler: Almost, I actually really liked the cool TRON furniture.
Jackie: You would.
