This trendy chocolate shop justifies its uptown prices with the fact that its sweets are imported from Belgium. The house specialty, though, is the Liége waffles. Made with thick, yeast-leavened dough rather than a runny batter, they turn out a bread-like waffle that has balls of pearl sugar throughout. These caramelize in the dough as the waffle cooks, leaving a wonderful, crispy crust that gives way to a thick, sweet center. At Chocolade van Brugge, these waffles can be topped with chocolate or Nutella for a few extra bucks — but however you eat them, they’re magnificent.
