Or, rather, does your kid wanna be an architect?

I often think it would have been nice to have a little pressure from the parents when I was a teenager. Instead, they took the "hands off" approach and I was a bit of a free spirit. And, no, "free spirit" is not code for "slut".

After high school, I lacked direction and, consequently, spent a few years too long in college to figure my sh*t out.

So if you're the parent of a teenager, don't hesitate to be assertive in your expectations of your kid - they'll thank you for it later. And, if they show an interest in, say, architecture, be sure to encourage them.

And, waddya know? I can tell you how to do just that.

Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art is hosting the second installment of their "Teen Career Workshop: Inspiring Aspiring Architects". The first workshop was so popular, they just had to bring it back.

So this is how it works: you register your kid today (before 5 p.m. - hurry, there are still spots left!), you both show up on Saturday, join a group led by a local architect and start getting inspired.

And if your kid doesn't feel inspired, well, don't let him or her major in Architecture.

See? Parenthood is so easy!

SMoCA accepts kids in 10th, 11th and 12th grade and the workshop runs from check-in at noon until 4:00 p.m.

Participating architects include:

John Kane of Architekton
Brent Kendle of Kenlde Design Collaborative
Mike Medici of SmithGroup
Christiana Moss of Studio Ma
Mark Patterson of SmithGroup
Awilda Rodriquez and Paola Sanza of digital extension [dex]

Matt Salenger of CoLab Studio
Dough Sydnor of Douglas Sydnor Architect & Associates
Kristine Woolsey & Jeff Ericson of Woolsey Studio

The workshop is held at SmithGroup architecture offices (address and directions provided after reservation is made). Call 480-874-4641.
