As Club Red Readies Final Show at Tempe Location, Bands Look Forward to New Venue

The news came in late March, when Club Red announced it would move away from its current Tempe location at University Drive and Loop 101 in favor of a much larger venue in Mesa. The new space once was a movie theater, which Club Red is currently reconstructing in order to accommodate for future shows.

Before its two-week hiatus, there is one last show at the old venue, on Saturday, May 17. The night is set to feature seven local bands that all plan to send the venue out with a bang.

Guitarist Joey Radziwill of Dichotomize says he looking forward to the new venue.

"The metal community is growing. However, when Club Red is in a sort of 'hidden area,' most of the metal fans might not even know that the venue exists," Radziwill says. "The bigger the better. If the venue is larger and new people will go just to see what they have transformed internally."

Club Red's current building is definitely more out of sight when you pass by the location. If you've never been to the venue or have never seen it, it could be due to the Waffle House and other parts of the plaza that sit in front of the venue and obstruct it from view.

Radziwill went on to say how the venue could serve as the best one in the valley with its new location.

"If you think about it, Club Red has given a lot to everyone, they deserve to be the new stable local venue but yet, have the ability to be a national venue. That is what Club Red is to a lot of people."

Singularity, another band playing Saturday, has had the privilege of playing a number of shows at Club Red. Jack Fliegler, the band's guitarist and vocalist, looks forward to the move.

"Even though they're moving to a new location, it's sad to think that we won't ever play at that location again. But we're happy to give it one last rumble before they move."

It's a ray of hope for concertgoers. With much of Phoenix's recent venue news being about the next one closing, it's a relief to know that this one is more of an upgrade than a closing.

Until May 31, when Authority Zero takes Club Red's new stage, Saturday, May 17, is the last chance you'll have to see Club Red's old digs.
