Since the release of their debut album, Tennessee, The Prowling Kind have been looking to prove it is one of the premier indie rock bands on the Phoenix scene. The band already has passed many of the traditional milestones for a Valley band looking to conquer that next step. The group has big shows to their credit, a phenomenal album, and one of the best music videos of 2014 for "Melted Together."
The next mountain to climb will be a headlining set at Crescent Ballroom, on Wednesday, April 23, to be precise.
"One of the definitions of 'prowl' is to fervently pursue something, and we feel like that's the attitude we have with what we are doing," says frontwoman Mickey Pangburn.
It's good the band has that attitude, because it will need it to pack the 550-person venue midweek.
This is not The Prowling Kind's first show at Crescent. The band released Tennessee there in August with support from Future Loves Past and Northern Hustle.
"Crescent feels like home," Pangburn said. "Our first show there, we were just praying to God we'd make it through the set. Now, we play the songs because we enjoy doing it. I think we have become more comfortable with ourselves as performers."
The band's comfort level certainly shows, as Pangburn and her brood have become a go-to name on the indie scene.
However, this engagement at Stateside Presents' flagship venue is entirely different from the band's last go-round at the best venue in town. Besides just a different lineup of bands -- this one includes Wooden Indian, Snake! Snake! Snakes!, and the Madera Strand -- the circumstance is wholly different, too. When a band releases new material, it usually energizes its fan base and brings out everyone, from the hardcore lovers to the casual listeners, and of course having a weekend show never hurts.
So it's not say filling the Crescent on a weekend for an album release is easy, but it is certainly easier than packing the place on a Wednesday sans new recordings.
"The first show at Crescent helped us break into the scene and prove we can pull," says keyboard player Erin Biel.
The event will be The Prowling Kind's last big show in Phoenix until August. The band intends to spend parts of the summer touring and the rest in the studio preparing a new EP, which, according to drummer Jesse Pangburn, they hope to release before 2015.
