Wow, an R&B star singing about marriage and commitment and true love. You're not dreaming it--it's happened with Jason DeRulo's "What If," and it's downright refreshing to hear a guy who's already sung about dirty fantasies belt about something more meaningful.
Unfortunately, the track's melody and singing is boring, but at least you can appreciate the lyrics. He sings: "Picture me on one knee with the perfect diamond ring. We just met, but if you say 'Yes,' we'd have our wedding on the beach. It could happen, raise three kids, and we grow old so happily." What, Jason?! You want to live with one woman for the rest of your life?!?!
Yes, it's true. Instead of telling the object of his affection how he wants to rip her clothes off, have a threesome with her and forget her in the morning, DeRulo sings about treating a woman with respect and giving her the world.
Not every love song has to be this sappy, of course, but it so surprising to hear among all the drunk hook-up songs, it's worth noting. And while DeRulo is barely legal, the message he sings here is more mature than a lot of men years older. Kudos to him for having the cojones to sing a sweet and sincere song when he could have gone the smutty route.
