California singer-songwriter Joey Cape is best known for his work in bands like Lagwagon and Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies. When he's not working on records for those groups, Cape is building a pretty strong solo career for himself. Unlike the pop-punk sound Cape developed with his bands, his solo work offers a far more intimate and stripped-down sound. Cape's solo, mostly acoustic work also shows a much different side of him. Eschewing tongue-in-cheek humor, he deals with everything from the loss of close friends to peer pressure on his latest album, Doesn't Play Well with Others. Yes, it's a bit on the heavy side, given that the most recent Lagwagon EP is cheekily titled I Think My Older Brother Used to Listen to Lagwagon. Perhaps most notable thing about the recent release of Doesn't Play Well is the fact that most of the album has been available online for over a year now. Starting in January 2010, Cape released a new song each month on his website. After all 12 songs on the album were released online, the record was given a physical release, complete with artwork contributed by Cape's daughter.
