On Saturday, I had the pleasure of returning to one of my favorite events of the year: the Mesa Super Show! Just when you think the lowriding lifestyle might be fading away, I am here to remind you that it is alive and well.
The culture, the cars, the food, the people, the $20,000 meta-flake paint jobs, the music, the concert, the models, the vendors, the hop contest, the award ceremony -- all of them come together to make this day special.
So many car club members look forward to this day as a celebration of all the hard work they've put into their art, each of them planning for this event months in advance by requesting a day off work, booking a hotel, and carefully loading their pride and joy onto a flatbed. All that for a chance to enjoy a day with like-minded enthusiasts of the art of lowriding.
Entire families were treated to an eyeful of custom-car goodness at this event, which was carefully planned by Richard Ochoa and his staff, who also make up the Society Car Club of Mesa.
In the past, events like this have been associated with gangs and negative undertones, but that was definitely not the case on Saturday, when the upper-80s weather was perfect for a day on the fresh green lawn of Mesa Amphitheatre.
Entertainment included the legendary Rose Royce giving you classic R&B hits like "Wishing on a Star" and the Latin All Star Band delivering tons of genre favorites. Rocky Padilla, Proper Dos, Zig Zag, Angie Gomez, and of course yours truly, with my boys Mob Fam, rounded out the event.
It's been exciting to watch this event mature to where it seems like big-name sponsors are practically fighting to be associated with it -- where it seems like this lowriding event might as well be declared an official Mesa holiday.
When I say this was a full day for us, it's because we started setting up our merch booth at 8 a.m.; I didn't take my last picture with a fan until 9:45 p.m. My nephew Nick Dollas and son Tito wrapped up the load-out in time to get us off the lot by 10:30. But it was another beautiful day in Arizona, and we're looking forward to the next one already.
