Show: Neon Trees at Ovations Live! Showroom at Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino
Date: Tuesday, December 14, 2010
Background: Many people's first exposure to Neon Trees was when their song "Animal" was featured in a commercial for Las Vegas this year. It soon got picked up by local radio, including X 103.9-FM, which sponsored the show at a very odd venue choice, a casino showroom in Chandler.
Why is stood out: Openers Paper Tongues made just as much of an impact as the headliners. The multi-genre, 7-piece band's energy filled the room to make the entire audience get up and dance, and the band had this confident swagger to them that makes them worthy of a headlining spot of their own. Neon Trees finished with a fun, off-the-walls set that had singer Tyler Glenn running around the stage, jumping on things and swinging his microphone around. He proved that you can still be super-cool even with a horrible mohawk.
Someone else said: "With his personality, lead singer Tyler Glenn makes Neon Trees an extremely interesting band to watch live. Some bands are quiet and less interactive, but Neon Trees is definitely not one of those bands. The girl standing next to me kept exclaiming to her boyfriend that Glenn 'must be on something' because of how energetic and wild he is onstage, but it's more likely that he is just a little bit crazy (but in a good way). Somehow his voice takes on a preacher quality when he is talking to the crowd, which makes you want to do everything he asks of you. If he tells us to jump, or clap, or dance, or sing, we all happily comply. He might be one of the most charismatic lead singers I have ever seen."- Jessica Schwahl, Newark Rock Music Examiner.
