When you put your key in the ignition and turn on the radio, what station would play right now? Either 101.1-FM the Beat or Eva 95.5-FM. Gotta love those jams.
What's the first album you bought? I got Green Day's Dookie on tape when it came out. I was 7.
What's the first concert you saw? Tom Petty at America West Arena (now US Airways Center) when I was 13. Once the concert started, it began to smell really funny and I ask my Mom what it was, and she very calmly and matter-of-factly said, "Ryan, that's marijuana." I was shocked.
Who is your favorite singer or band? Elvis Presley.
What's the last song played on your music player? "Night Moves," by Bob Seger.
What's your favorite concert you've ever been to? One of my favorite musicians is this obscure guy named Gary Wilson. His music is difficult to describe, and his live shows are even crazier -- a mix of strange electro pop from days long gone and performance art. Anyway, I got to see him play a regular jazz gig in an empty Italian restaurant in California. It was only Gary on two keyboards and an old jazz singer. How often do you get to have one of your favorite musicians give you a personal concert? I got to see him perform his regular weird stuff the next night.
Preferred format: CD, vinyl, cassette, 8-Track or digital? Digital these days, although I do spin records at home. My favorite album that I own would have to be this Elvis Presley release that was purely his on-stage banter. No songs, just Elvis talking to the audience. Two sides!
What's your favorite album? My cool guy answer would be Chocolate and Cheese by Ween. My sensitive side would say The Boy With the Arab Strap by Belle & Sebastian.
Does you computer track how many times you've played something -- if so, what's at the top of the list? An awesome little ditty from the album from the television program Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! called "Rolo Tony (Uncut)." I've never seen a 1-minute track bring so much happiness to people who hear it.
What was your favorite new or new-to-you album from the past year? Divine Providence, by Deer Tick. I saw these fellas at the Crescent and have been a big fan ever since.
What one song would you play if you had a world-wide radio audience? Lou Reed's "Street Hassle," because it is like 11 minutes long and is barely a song at some points.
Who is your favorite local artist? I don't really have my finger on the local music scene pulse anymore, but I did hear that there's a Native American Neil Diamond impersonator at one of the casinos, so I'll just go ahead and pick him.
What is your favorite local venue to see music? I like the Rhythm Room and the second Nita's Hideaway that is long gone.
What is your favorite music video? The video for Fatboy Slim's "Weapon of Choice." Christopher Walken showing his true talent and dancing/flying around a hotel. Spike Jonze killed it with that one.
