A Chandler man and his 7-year-old autistic son, who went missing last week, were found dead in an apparent vehicle wreck last night.

Conrad Hernandez, 47, and his son, Max, 7, were last heard from on Friday morning when Conrad was supposed to drop the boy off at school.

According to officials at the Department of Public Safety, Hernandez called the school and told Max's teachers that he was sick and wouldn't be going to school that day.

That was the last time anyone heard from Hernandez or his son.

Hernandez, according to the DPS, was suffering from depression at the time he took the child, and there were reports that he was suicidal.

After being unable to contact Hernandez, police began a manhunt for the pair, which ended at around 5:30 last night, when police found their bodies ejected from their vehicle just north of Black Canyon City.

The crash occurred one mile south of Sunset Point along Interstate 17, where police helicopters located Hernandez's 2009 Mazda sedan.

Police were unable to recover the vehicle last night but resumed efforts this morning.
