A veteran Gilbert police officer was shot and killed last night during a traffic stop. According to police, Lieutenant Eric Shuhandler was pursuing suspects during a high-speed chase with other officers along the U.S.-60. Police fired several shots at the vehicle, and the suspects returned fire. Shuhandler was reportedly hit by one bullet, and died at a local hospital...Gilbert Town Manager George Pettit announced his retirement yesterday. Pettit, who has been in his position for eight years, will serve his last day March 1. Gilbert Fire Chief Collin DeWitt will serve as interim town manager while a nationwide search is conducted for Pettit's replacement...A small plane crashed near Deer Valley airport yesterday. The pilot, alone in the single-engine plane, was killed. No one on the ground was hurt, and a spokesman for the FAA said the cause of the crash was unknown...
Police are looking for two men suspected of involvement in a shooting at local gay strip club Dick's Cabaret. The shooting, which wounded one patron, occurred Wednesday night, after the men reportedly inquired about job applications at the venue. The gunmen reportedly fled in a dark-blue sedan...A suspicious device in a student's backpack forced a lock-down at Red Mountain High School in Mesa yesterday. Police were called, and a bomb-squad robot determined the device was not a bomb; students were allowed back in class about 1 p.m. There's no word yet on whether police have identified the student who brought the device to the school, and the investigation continues...Authorities believe human remains found in Kingman may be those of a diabetic man missing since last month. James Jay Keefer, 55, disappeared after telling friends he was off to explore the mountains near Kingman. Keefer was reportedly in the company of his roommate, Greg Hawkins, a "person of interest" in the December 21 shooting death of a jogger in Glendale. Hawkins committed suicide in California after a 10-hour standoff with police.
