Despite what you may have heard, Governor Jan Brewer did not endorse the "Gang of Eight" immigration-reform bill.
However, it certainly may have sounded like she endorsed the bill, given her apparent inability to speak clearly.
Brewer hit up Fox News on Monday and was asked whether she thinks "what we're seeing now in the Senate" on immigration is good or bad.
"I think that what we're seeing taking place in the Senate is a victory for Arizona," Brewer responded.
That led to a lot of people being confused and produced headlines such as "Brewer Backs Senate Immigration Bill: 'Victory for Arizona'" (National Review), "Jan Brewer: Senate Immigration Bill 'Victory for Arizona'" (ABC News), and "Jan Brewer: Immigration Bill 'A Victory for Arizona'" (Huffington Post).
Arizona's Republican Senators, John McCain and Jeff Flake, were glad to hear it and praised Brewer for taking that stance.
Brewer has since clarified that what she said was not what she meant.
After Brewer said it's a "victory," she added, "I'm glad that they finally decided to talk about the border surge that we've called out for since, um, 2010, asking them to take control of our border -- operational control."
That's what the "victory" was, which wasn't clear, since she spouted off an answer to a question that wasn't really asked.
Brewer was saying the victory was an amendment to spend $38 billion adding more border agents and fencing, which hadn't even been voted on at the time.
"For the record, I have not endorsed the Gang of 8 #immigration bill," Brewer's press squad posted on Twitter. "I am supportive of the border surge element of the Corker amendment. Border security MUST come first as part of any bill. #immigration."
Brewer's spokesman also issued a press release, further explaining Brewer's non-endorsement.
So, not only did Brewer not endorse the bill, this is apparently what it takes to figure out what she's talking about.
