Yesterday, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio penned a gushing, illegal immigrant-themed endorsement for District 6 Congressional candidate Matt Salmon. Salmon responded with a glowing review of the sheriff's job performance -- which is a far cry from what former Congressman Salmon had to say about America's self-proclaimed "toughest sheriff" a few years ago.

In a 2005 New Times article, written by former NT scribe John Dougherty, when asked about Arpaio, Salmon said the following: "I don't respect him. I don't think he's playing with a full deck."

Arpaio must have found those missing cards, because yesterday, Salmon said the following:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio has been a tireless advocate for the safety of Maricopa County citizens for almost two decades. He understands how important it is to protect our national borders against illegal immigration and he knows I will make that a top priority in Washington. I am grateful for his confidence in my ability to represent the best interests of our communities.

Meanwhile, when Salmon ran for governor in 2002, his "tireless advocate for the safety of Maricopa County citizens," good ol' "Sheriff Joe," backed his Democratic opponent, Janet Napolitano, which "ensured" her election.

Apparently, nothing heals old wounds like illegals and egos, because Arpaio has nothing but kind words for the man who once backed his former opponent, Dan Saban.

Straight from the sheriff's lips:

I am honored to support my good friend Matt Salmon in his bid to return to Congress. Having worked extensively with Matt in the past, I know I can count on him to protect the interests of our community and our state, especially when it deals with securing our borders.  Now more than ever, Washington requires experienced and principled conservatives in Congress - Matt Salmon exemplifies these qualities to the highest degree.

Get a room, fellas.

We contacted both Salmon's campaign and the sheriff's office for comment late last night. Neither immediately got back to us. Check back later today for updates.
