The hits keep coming for Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
First, the media continues to hound him about hundreds of botched sex-crime investigations. Then Randy Parraz, the man who organized the takedown of ousted former Senate President Russell Pearce, demands his resignation. And now he's being asked to leave the Republican Party.
Oh...and did we mention the Department of Justice is announcing the findings of its investigation into America's self-proclaimed "toughest sheriff" later today (check back later for that story)?
Café Con Leche Republicans, a national GOP organization, put out a release this week demanding Arpaio get out of the party.
"The wheels are falling off the wagon at the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office (MCSO), as shown by the lack of investigation of at least 400 serious sex crime cases, many involving child rape," officials with the group say. "Sheriff Arpaio has disgraced his office and the Republican Party ... For both the good of people of Arizona and the GOP, we call on Arpaio to immediately step down and leave the GOP, and clear the field for a worthy candidate to fill the job of Sheriff."
The chances of Arpaio resigning are about as likely as Arizona's Republican congressional representatives publicly calling for his ouster. In other words, we're not holding out breath.
In the meantime, Café Con Leche also demanded Arpaio publicly apologize to the victims of the botched sex-crime cases, to the people of Maricopa County, and to thousands of racially profiled Hispanics "for his abject failure to protect them."
