The British Open teed off this morning at the Old Course at St. Andrews, one of the most historic links in all of golf.

Over 150 golfers will take their hacks to try to win the third major this golf season.

But the tournament also means it's yet another chance for Phil Mickelson to pass Tiger Woods as the world's Number One-ranked golfer.

Phil's been down this road many times before. And he has always failed to get the job done.

Just look at last weekend, where he missed the cut at the Scottish Open. A disastrous quintuple-bogey effectively cost Lefty a chance at weekend play as he missed the cut by one stroke.

Try, try again, Phil.

Although this tournament might be the toughest place to overtake Tiger -- St. Andrews is probably Tiger's favorite course on the planet.

And it showed as he shot an opening round 67 this morning, good for five under.

In addition, Phil has just one top-10 finish at this tournament in his career.

The scenarios for Lefty to claim the top spot are as follows:

* Win the Open Championship

* Finish alone in second with Woods finishing outside the top four

* Finish alone in third with Woods finishing outside the top 14

* Finish alone in fourth with Woods missing the cut

Woods has been in the top ranking for 266 straight weeks. While Tiger's probably dead last in the husband ranking, it's time he gets knocked off his golf perch.

Though Phil Mickelson won an ESPY award last night as the "Best Male Golfer," it's time for him to prove that he deserved such a prestigious award.

Anyways, good luck, Phil. You're going to need it this tournament.
