The Arizona Cardinals are doing so well this year, the city of Phoenix is declaring Friday "Arizona Cardinals Day."

Mayor Phil Gordon, dressed for team spirit in a Cardinals jersey, will announce the proclamation at a city council meeting at 2 p.m., says his spokesman, Scott Phelps.

Team representative Mike Bidwill and Big Red, the team's mascot, will also be at the meeting in the council chambers, 200 West Jefferson Street.

"Sporting teams are a great rallying point for our communities," Phelps tells us. "We're pleased and proud to do this for the Cardinals. Playoffs in any sport are very exciting, and when you have a team that's still in the running, that's great."

The Cards are set to play the Carolina Panthers this Saturday in Charlotte, North Carolina. -- Ray Stern
