What's the first thing that Rage Against the Machine frontman Zack de la Rocha is gonna do when he touches down in the PHX May 1 -- a day before the big anti-Arpaio march from the Wells Fargo Building downtown to Joe's Estrella Jail on May 2? Kick it with his amigos and amigas at Garibaldi Real Mexican Grill, where he'll be helping to raise funds for the Tonatierra Community Development Institute and the Macehualli Work Center.

Macehualli, which is run by civil rights activist Salvador Reza, caters to the needs of the jornaleros, or day laborers, who use the site near 25th Street and Bell Road as a place to be picked up by temporary employers. However, Macehualli and its parent organization Tonatierra envision turning the 2.1 acre property they own in north Phoenix into "a multi-use community campus and business center," which they will call the Macehualli Community Campus.

According to Macehualli's capital campaign Web site, the campus will include "educational institutions of all ranges, medical service providers and clinics, Green Economy Business incubators, a legal services center, a workforce development and training center, a public library, tax preparation, and a unique combined Youth and Senior Citizen Center."

Sounds like an ambitious plan, but a worthy one for the rough and tumble Palomino Neighborhood. In any case, the fundraiser includes dinner with Zack, and will be held at 5:30 p.m. at Garibaldi Real Mexican Grill, 3024 West Van Buren Street, Phoenix. Adults get in for a $50 contribution; $30 is asked of students with valid school I.D. You can RSVP at 602.316.9732, or [email protected]. Or you can buy tickets direct via PayPal at centromacehualli.org.

At this point, the promoters tell me Zack will not be performing, unless the mood hits him. Hey, you never know...stranger things have happened.
