While thumbing through the pages of the latest Food Network Magazine, I came across one of the strangest suggestions for an Easter gift I've ever seen. Chocolate bunnies? Too bourgeois. Baskets of faux grass and jelly beans? Yawn. Even this year's chocolate-covered Peeps aren't exactly hitting the mark.
Size does matter... |
Instead of fattening candy, buy your sweetie (or foodie friend or relative or whomever) an Ostrich egg big enough to equal two dozen of the store bought chicken kind! The upside is that an ostrich egg would be much easier to find during your annual Easter egg hunt. The downside is that it'll take a couple of boxes of Paas dye to color it.
Now, you might wonder where exactly you can get one of these babies. Rumor has it you can buy ostrich and emu eggs at selected Whole Foods stores, though they're a bit pricey.
As it turns out, Food Network's suggested supplier -- the Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch -- is right here in our home state. This 600-acre ranch (the largest in the nation) is located in Picacho, AZ, about halfway between Phoenix and Tucson. If you don't want to drive down for a visit, no problem. You can order an ostrich egg or two via their website and have them shipped directly to your house for about twenty bucks.
For a more artsy alternative, check out the beautiful sculptures carried by Phoenix-based artist The Carved Egg. Either way, we're guessing your gift won't soon be forgotten.
