Chicago-based Al's Beef has become synonymous with the classic Italian beef sandwich, starting as a small family-owned business in 1938 in the Windy City's Little Italy neighborhood, and eventually becoming a chain with locations across Illinois.

Condering the strong connection between Chicago and the Valley, Al's Beef's new location in North Scottsdale (14740 N. Northsight) is a smart move, because transplants and tourists alike will go for a taste of home. Meanwhile, everyone else will just be happy to try someplace that's not pimping gourmet burgers.

To get locals excited about beefing up their diet, Al's is offering a free Chicago-style hot dog and fries to customers who purchase a "Classic Al" sandwich between 10:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. today (normal business hours).

The grand opening party gets started at 4:30 p.m., with music, food, prizes, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane and restaurant founder Chris Pacelli at 5:45 p.m.
