In a world full of dainty two-egg omelets and pancakes the size of coffee coasters, the newly opened Broken Yolk Cafe in Mesa provides a solid dose of over-sized portions that are sure to satisfy the fat kid in of all of us.
If you go to San Diego often, then you probably know all about the Broken Yolk Cafe including that the Southern California chain opened up a branch in Mesa. And if you don't check out the Pacific Ocean regularly, then you have all the more reason to go hit the new breakfast spot located at the northeast corner of Southern Avenue and Gilbert Road.

Aside from actually serving up enough food to fill up a full-size human being, Broken Yolk dishes out some of the more delicious traditional breakfasts you'll find in the East Valley. Sure, it might not be anything super gourmet (and it's certainly not the "hangover party" atmosphere of many trendy Scottsdale brunch spots), but Broken Yolk does your classic American and Mexican favorites better than most casual breakfast eateries.
We've tried the Benedicts, omelets, breakfast burritos, pancakes, and more on the menu, and all of them are worth a try. The real magic is in the cupcake-like dough of Broken Yolk's blueberry muffins, which is borderline addicting and absolutely worth the drive from nearly anywhere in the Valley.
The pancakes are fluffy; the omelets are varied, flavorful, and filling; and the burritos, chilaquiles, huevos rancheros, and other Mexican breakfast entrees are as Californian as it gets. If you're feeling brave, they still didn't have anyone on their Wall of Fame for the Broken Yolk Iron Man and Iron Woman Special when we checked it out.
The only downside about Broken Yolk in San Diego is the hour-plus wait if you go at a reasonable time on the weekend, so we recommend you check out the one in Mesa before the rest of the Valley finds out about it.
The Broken Yolk Cafe is located at 2034 E. Southern Ave. in Mesa and is open 6 a.m. - 2 p.m. on weekdays and 6 a.m. - 3 p.m. on weekends.
