The Details: Half-off all drinks and appetizers during happy hour. Depending on the day, you may also be able to score some sweet drink and food specials, including 2-4-1 burgers (Mon) or pizzas (Wed), and the ubiquitous taco-themed Tuesday.

The Interior: Devil's Advocate is a college sports bar with a little more polish than expected. The exposed brick interior, leather accents and rows of books further the collegiate feel. And with TVs displayed on just about every flat surface both inside and out, you won't have to miss a minute of whatever game your crew is there to watch. A smallish patio out front surrounded by vines and with two raised fire pits is also a comfortable option on a cooler evening.The Cost: Four drinks and some chicken rolls came to came to about 13 bucks before tax and tip. Half-price everything.
The Conclusion: Devi's Advocate is the type of place that lists the ABV of every beer they carry, draft and bottle, on the menu. It's also populated by ASU students in their early twenties drinking very, very heavily.
We unwittingly showed up early on the evening of the ASU-UA game, and were treated to the spectacle of maroon and gold co-eds filing in, standing room only. Since we arrived pretty early, the patio was still empty and we managed to score a seat near one of the raised fire pits and ordered some food.
Almost an hour later, we were greeted with fried chicken rolls and told that the kitchen was so backed up that they weren't taking any more food orders, and that the remainder of our food would probably take another half hour to get out. So we cancelled the shrimp basket and sliders in favor of a more liquid dinner. The chicken rolls ($2.99) were a decent but forgettable choice of fried bar food, wonton wrappers stuffed with chicken and other miscellaneous bits.
Granted, we chose a pretty stupid day to try out the Devil's Advocate, but it did allow us the opportunity to gain a real feel for the historic Tempe watering hole. If you're looking for cheap booze and plenty of school spirit, swing by the Devil's Advocate on a game day. Otherwise, stick to some lazy Sunday drinking over football. And if you're not into the sports scene or the meat market, look elsewhere.
