Marshmallow Crispy Oreos Are a Real Treat

Just to be clear, the only reason Marshmallow Crispy Oreos aren’t called Rice Krispies Treat Oreos is because Kellogg’s and Nabisco hate each other thoroughly. The entire cookie is based on a Rice Krispies Treat, the scent is that of a Rice Krispies Treat, and there’s even a photo of a Rice Krispies Treat on the cover of the package.

When it comes to mimicking such an identifiable and iconic dessert, you have to take into consideration every aspect of the treat. From the flavor to the texture, the smell to the visual presentation, if not enough of the new product triggers the memories of old, the new product will likely fall on its face.

In comparison to the Brownie Batter Oreos (that perfectly capture everything about brownie batter) or even the S’mores Oreos (that did a far better job of re-creating s’mores than expected), Marshmallow Crispy Oreos don’t exactly nail the Rice Krispies Treat vibe on a few different levels.

Upon opening the bag, you’re immediately greeted by the warm, sugary, unmistakable fragrance of a Rice Krispies Treat, and as far as taste goes, Oreo pretty much nailed the Rice Krispies Treat flavor. It’s not the same buttery taste that you used to love when you were a little kid, but it re-enacts the flavor that came out of the shiny blue wrappers as well as anything could. If you blended these with ice cream and wanted to pass it off as a Rice Krispies Treat shake, you absolutely could.

Texture is where the Marshmallow Crispy Oreos start to fall apart, both literally and figuratively. The cookies seem to be made of a slightly different, more crumbly material from a standard Oreo, and it’s not a good thing. Rather than snapping, crackling, and popping, they tended to lose bits and pieces of cookie both in the bag and in our hands before we had the chance to eat one with structural integrity. There was obviously no way to give an Oreo cookie the exact same mouthfeel as a Rice Krispies Treat, but it might’ve been better to go with a traditional Oreo rather than modify it ever so slightly (unless we just got a weird bag, which is totally possible).

If you ignore what they’re supposed to represent, Marshmallow Crispy Oreos are another deliciously over-sweetened addition to the weird Oreo family. They feel comforting and familiar, but not like you’ve been eating them your whole life, which is a nice combination. Regardless of how similar they are to any other cheap childhood favorites, one thing is certain: Marshmallow Crispy Oreos are a treat.
