Staying in? We've got you covered -- both on the culinary and entertainment fronts. Now presenting Dinner and a Movie -- a guide to a do it yourself evening of food and film.
For many of us film and food nerds, Oscar Sunday is bigger than Superbowl Sunday. Each year we attend a party where food selections are themed according to them films.
Sometimes the food themes are literal, like last year's Beef Bourguignon for the film Julie and Julia. Other times we stretch it a bit, like the year someone brought Mexican pastries for Pan's Labyrinth. And we will never forget the year we saluted Little Miss Sunshine with the "Fucking Chicken".
Our friends roll out the red carpet, literally, and snap our pictures as we walk to the door dressed as a character from one of the films. The point is to have some fun with it, and we sure do. We used the films True Grit, The King's Speech, 127 Hours, Winter's Bone and Toy Story 3 for this year's inspiration.
Get ready for the red carpet after the jump.
(You can also use ginger ale, we preferred 7Up) Popcorn: Trail Mix Boulders - 127 Hours 4 cups popped popcorn 1 cup white sugar 1/4 cup corn syrup 1/2 cup water 1/4 cup butter 1/2 teaspoon baking soda Pop some corn and lay out on a cookie sheet. In a heavy saucepan, add sugar, corn syrup, water, and butter and heat until melted and bubbly. Add baking soda and stir. Take off heat. Coat each piece of popcorn with caramel. It will be light in color, be sure each piece is coated, this will help it stick together when you form the "boulders". Sprinkle the trail mix throughout. Coat hands with butter or vegetable oil and press into balls together while still warm. Let set on waxed paper until firm.
Add a splash of whiskey, a dash of hot sauce and some fresh cracked pepper to bbq sauce and brush over whole wings. Baked in Boston - The Fighter What makes baked beans Boston style is the addition of molasses and salt pork. Canned ready-to-eat Boston style beans are available at most supermarkets. We added thinly sliced onions to ours, to make the Red Sox B. Lotso Strawberries in the Salad - Toy Story 3 We started with baby Spinach and dressed them with a balsamic-honey dressing. Mix together one tablespoon olive oil, one tablespoon of balsamic vinegar, and honey to taste then toss with spinach. Add pieces of bacon, chopped walnuts, and lots of sliced strawberries.
1 cup trail mix (mix of raisins, peanuts, m&m's)
