From now until we publish the 2016 edition of Best of Phoenix, New Times is naming 100 Tastemakers — members of our local culinary community who help shape the way we eat, drink, and think about food in Phoenix. Some you'll know, and for others, it'll be a first introduction, but each person on our list deserves a nod for helping make our city so delicious. Oh, and while you're here, be sure to check out our list of 100 Creatives.

46. Andrew Gooi of Food Talkies

Nothing tells a story quite like a film, and when it comes to making films about the talented chefs, artisans, and bartenders in the Phoenix food scene, no one does it quite like Andrew Gooi. Through his project, Food Talkies, the Malaysian-born filmmaker gets inside the minds of some of the Valley's best culinary masterminds, capturing not only the dishes they create, but also the stories of the people behind them.

His projects include everything from a 20-minute film about James Beard award-nominated chef Kevin Binkley to a short profile of Phoenix hot sauce company founder Jacob Cutino.

"I believe that many people have a food story, be it a memorable flavor profile from childhood or an introduction to a dish that would forever change their lives," Gooi writes. "Through the films that I create, I hope to honor the food pioneers, chefs, artists, family, and friends."

Today, he dishes on his dream project and what he was doing five years ago.

My go-to place for Malaysian food in Phoenix is BP Street Cafe.

The best kept secret in Phoenix is Reign of Thai, one of the more authentic Thai restaurants, one of my favorites, off Cactus Road and Cave Creek.

Five years ago I was a civil engineer and never thought I'd be a filmmaker.

My dream project is exactly what I'm doing right now, which is Food Talkies. Love it!
