If you want to know what time of year it is, or what's trendy in the food and craft world, Pinterest is your place. I'm not very fond of trying to keep up with the latest fads, but there are a few trends that I can get behind. Possibly my favorite trendy item is the Mason jar. I don't care what anybody says, I'll be a Mason jar lover for life. My other favorite bandwagon to jump on is that of New Year's resolutions. In fact, I set resolutions all year long. I'm here to tell you that Mason jars could be the key to keeping this year's resolutions.

It's funny and a bit ridiculous, but hear me out. The majority of people set goals that are aimed at improving their health and overall happiness. Whether that be weight loss, saving money or spending time with friends, they key is in planning. That's where this salad comes in. Plan to make this salad once a week and you have lunch covered for the entire work week! You'll improve your health, save money and you'll have more time to relax during your lunch hour.

The idea of putting salad in jars was one of the greatest things I learned from Pinterest. There are hundreds of recipes out there, but this detox salad is perfect after the holidays. The key to this salad is the way everything is chopped up. Cauliflower and broccoli are chopped really fine in a food processor (or by hand) to create a finer texture that is easier to eat (and digest!). But the real magic is in topping the salad off with a small amount of maple syrup. Trust me, it's not weird, it's awesome.

This recipe comes from Oh She Glows, a great website dedicated to healthy eating. In reading the blog post I learned that this detox salad recipe was inspired by those Whole Foods salads that come in cups (and cost a fortune). PERFECT! If Whole Foods puts it in plastic cups, we'll put ours in glass jars. In my opinion, this is an upgrade.

Ingredients:

2 heads broccoli, stems removed 1 head cauliflower, stem removed 2 1/2 cups shredded carrots 1/2 cup sunflower seeds 1 cup currants 1/2 cup finely chopped fresh parsley 1/2 cup raisins 4-6 tablespoons fresh lemon juice, to taste salt and pepper to taste (Oh She Glows says lots of pepper, but I don't like pepper so I didn't use any) kelp granules or Herbamare (optional) to taste. I used kelp granules. pure maple syrup, to drizzle on before serving

In a food processor (or by hand) process the broccoli until fine. Place in a large bowl.

In a food processor (or by hand) process the cauliflower until fine. Add it to the bowl of broccoli. Do the same with the carrots.

Stir in the sunflower seeds, currants, parsley and raisins. Add the lemon juice and seasonings to taste and stir again.

Drizzle with maple syrup to taste.
