17: Steak and Kidney Pie from George and Dragon
Across the pond you can get all manner of Yorkshire pudding, blood sausage, and bangers 'n' mash. Here it's hard to find any of those British treats, and even if you do, sticking with fish and chips is generally the smart thing to do. Traditional English fare can be hard to find, but George and Dragon helps us get our fill of chips with curry and puff pastry pies. The steak and kidney pie is a bit on the wild side, but don't let the kidneys deter you. Think stick-to-your-ribs American pot roast meets savory English pie.
The steak and kidney pie isn't a pie by American standards, and relies more on a blanket of puff pastry instead of a flaky, buttery crust. Guinness-braised steak chunks and slightly musky chunks of lamb kidney were bathed in gravy and tossed with lots of onions. Requisite chips and peas served on the side, and bottles of HP sauce and malt vinegar at the ready!
