Number 1: Braised leeks with mozzarella at FnB

It's really, really hard to blog about a favorite dish that isn't available just yet. I make myself hungry as I write this, knowing that I'll have a craving for a while.

All summer long, I've been thinking about an item that gained cult status among the local foodnik set, and hasn't been on the menu at FnB for some months now. But I'm told it'll be back with a vengeance come mid-to-late October, and I swear I'll be first in line to order it as soon as chef-owner Charleen Badman starts cooking it again.

Braised leeks sound so simple, right? Humble, even?

Maybe in theory, but here, they become something glorious, thanks to mustard breadcrumbs, a mantle of rich, buttery, melted homemade mozzarella, and a fried egg whose yolk becomes a saucy "situation" when owner Pavle Milic gleefully bursts it with a fork as he serves it.

"Eat your veggies" is my new mantra, thanks to these leeks.
