"Sweet Julia" Series Debut Saturday, June 21

Catch Phoenix's own confection queen Julia Baker in the debut of the six-episode series Sweet Julia this Saturday on The Cooking Channel. (Check your local listings for times.) The series will cover everything from desserts -- of course -- to how to incorporate how to use sweet flavors in savory dishes. Dishes will include Cocoa-Rubbed Rib Eye and Pain Perdu with Rotisserie Chicken to Baked Alaska and Salted Caramels. Baker, a Paris-trained pastry chef, is the owner and founder of Julia Baker Chocolates.

Tilted Earth Wine and Music Festival Saturday, June 21

Help Page Spring Cellars celebrate the winery's 10th anniversary (and the summer solstice) this weekend at the Tilted Earth Wine and Music Festival at the Riverfront Park in Cottonwood. The festival will offer specialty selections from 16 northern Arizona wineries, including Arizona Stronghold Vineyards, Burning Tree Cellars, Chateau Tumbleweed, Grand Canyon Winery, Oak Creek Vineyards and Winery, and Pillsbury Wine Company, as well as food from six food trucks. Entertainment will include face painting and sumo suit wrestling, and a live music line-up from seven artists and bands.

Arizona Centennial Cookbook Summer Cooking Demo Series Saturday, June 21

This summer Williams-Sonoma inside the Biltmore Fashion Park will host a series of cooking demonstrations by chefs featured in the 100 Years, 100 Chefs, 100 Recipes cookbook. Kicking off the series this Saturday will be The Phoenician Resort's Executive Sous Chef Lee Hillson, who will be showing guests how to cook Mediterranean Paella. Future participating chefs include Robert McGrath, Chris Newstrom, Aurore de Beaudry, and Josh Hebert who will also feature their dishes from the cookbook. The demonstration starts at 11 a.m. Copies of 100 Years, 100 Chefs, 100 Recipes will be available at the event.

Culinary 101 - Knife Skills Saturday, June 21

Sharpen your knife skills this Saturday with Classic Cooking Academy in Scottsdale. The class will cover a knife demonstration, followed by practical skills (or hands-on experience) of various cuts of fruits and vegetables, herbs and garlic. Students will learn how to debone a chicken, purchase knives, and care for them. The course also includes a meal of chicken and vegetable stir-fry. Team USA v. Portugal Sunday, June 22

This Sunday watch Team USA take on Portugal in our country's second game of the first round of the World Cup. Lots of local bars and restaurants will be opening early to show the game, including The Handlebar Tempe, which will open at 8 a.m. The bar will also be offering drink specials, including $5 Modelo Especials or $16 buckets. In downtown Phoenix, try Rosie McCaffrey's Irish Restaurant and Pub, which will be offering breakfast and food specials for the game and throughout the World Cup.
