Happy Hour

Happy Hour at The Main Ingredient in Phoenix

The Main Ingredient is a neighborhood hang out in all the best ways. It's not frilly and it's definitely not upscale, but it is a nice, casual spot in a cozy old house. The big patio is perfect this time of year to sit and sip happy hour drinks with your pooch or some friend or both. On Mondays you can do happy hour all day from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. and the rest of the week the bar/restaurant offers discounts from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.

The Offerings:

Drinks: 1/2 off draft pints $4 glasses of house red or white wine 1/2 off cocktails 1/2 off liquor

Food: No discounted food during happy hour

The Good: Main Ingredient is probably better known as a place to get pints. The eight-tap list offers a range of IPAs, pilsners, stouts, amber ales, and more from breweries like Deschutes, Four Peaks, Green Flash, and Firestone Walker all for $2.50. However, there's more to TMI than brews. Even the specialty cocktails are half off during happy hour. That means you can get a Negroni made with Half Moon gin or a West Coast, which is essentially a piña colada, for under $5.

The Bad: The fare at TMI is a mix of starters, sandwiches, and salads for the most part. While the bar does a nice job of offering fresher and healthier bar food, you're not getting any of it discounted during happy hour. That means you still have to shell out $6 for a ramekin of olives or the TMI toast with jalapeño cream cheese. If you want something more substantial to nibble on, you'll have to spend $14 on the "Pro-Pasto" plate (a name that we're not huge fans of). The sandwiches and salads run around $8 to $10.

Overall: Of the 84 hours a week Main Ingredient is open, 54 of those are "happy" hours; the allotted time for discounts is pretty generous. Honestly, though, this is a drinkers happy hour and we'll admit taking advantage of their $4.50 Negronis on more than one occasion. If you're looking for a laid back spot to get a drink with friends after work, this is the place -- just don't plan on filling up on cheap appetizers during happy hour.
