Hey, Wine Snobs: Can It!

Breaking tradition tends to set some into an uproar, so we can only imagine the even-more-disgusted-than-usual face of French sommeliers when they discover that several companies from the U.S. as well as Australia are now packaging wine in aluminum cans.

Director Francis Ford Coppola, who owns the Coppola Winery in California, packages his Sofia Blanc de Bancs sparkling wine in pink single-serving (187ml) cans, the same size traditionally sold in those tiny bottles you get on the airplane known as splits. As if that weren't quaint enough, each can also comes with its own pink straw (because no true "lady" sips her sparkling wine right out of the can).

Although Paris Hilton made the trend look like one giant gimmick after launching her own canned sparkling wine, Rich Prosecco, there is some actual substance (and likely future) for these cans of fermented goodness.

Australian wine company, Barokes, achieved a gold medal last year for its Cabernet Shiraz Merlot in a can at the Berlin Wine Trophy in Germany. It was the first time in history a canned wine product has ever received such an honor (not terribly surprising).

With today's emphasis on "green" production, canned wine is actually a much more energy efficient product. Since aluminum cans are 100% recyclable, they pack a much smaller carbon footprint than traditional glass wine bottles. For that reason alone, you'll probably see more of these popping up in the near future.

You can buy your own four-pack of canned wine at better liquor stores throughout the Valley. Sophia Blanc de Blancs is about $20 for a box of four 187ml cans.
