Hula's Modern Tiki, the retro-cool restaurant of Hawaiian-inspired eats and tropical cocktails, is planning a second location, Hula's 2, at 7213 East First Avenue, in the former home of Big Earl's BBQ, which shuttered just over a week ago.

"We want to emphasize community and bringing what we are on Central to Old Town," a representative for Hula's tells me. "It's all about the experience of the guest, being an active part of the community and welcoming everyone. Diversity and sincerity are what we are about."

The Hula's representative goes on to say that, like the original location on Central Avenue in Phoenix, the Old Town Hula's will have a similar Midcentury Modern feel with an urban twist, but with a few unique design features of its own.

Chris and Craig Delaney (who own Hula's Island Grill in California) and partner Dana Mule opened the 1,600-square-foot Hula's Modern Tiki in Central Phoenix in 2009. In June of last year, the trio introduced Twirl Frozen Yogurt, a funky fro-yo spot, in the same shopping center as their Hawaiian-inspired bar and restaurant.

A date for the opening of the Old Town Hula's has not been announced. Stay tuned for details.
