A brand-new spot called Second Line Creole Caribbean Cuisine just opened on Monday, in the place where Irie Jamaican Restaurant used to be before it moved up the street.
Owner Duma Shange, a native of uptown New Orleans, tells me he makes "the best waffles in town, from scratch."
The menu features half a dozen specialty waffle dishes (all $3.50), from Southern pecan to a seasonal strawberry shortcake waffle. There's Creole oatmeal, with raisins, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar, cream, and butter (wow!), cheese grits with turkey bacon and eggs, and fish served a few different ways -- with a waffle, with pancakes, or with grits. Creole jambalaya is a Friday special, and there's seafood gumbo on Saturdays. Cornbread and sweet potato pie are on the menu, too.
Second Line, located at 2727 E. Broadway Rd. is open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and is also open from 4 to 9 p.m. on Saturdays only. Call 602-276-7722 for more information.
