Pop Cho and Sweet Ginger at The Breadfruit

Once again, my yin and yang cravings have kicked in. To make up for a fattening food coma brought on by a cheeseburger, fries, and chocolate malt shake from Johnny Rockets (on a junkfood binge before I went to finally see Avatar at the Arizona Mills IMAX), I needed something quasi-healthy.

The Breadfruit is always good for this. This bright little Jamaican spot downtown has quite a few flavorful vegetarian dishes, and my favorite is Pop Cho and Sweet Ginger. A big scoop of mashed sweet potatoes, flecked with roasted garlic, is great for soaking up the tangy rum and rice vinegar sauce on the sauteed bok choy, which is fragrant with pickled ginger, rosemary, and onion. There are also a couple of sweet caramelized plantains on the side.

"My Favorite Carrot Juice" is so delicious, faintly flavored with vanilla, nutmeg, and coconut milk. Served on ice, it also contains some turbinado sugar for sweetness. 

​Just being in this sunny dining room is a mood-lifter when I need a break from staring at a computer screen. There are a few cafe tables under a leafy tree out front, too -- definitely snag one if you can!
